Invasive meningococcal disease in Sweden 2010
In the year 2010 a total of 68 cases of invasive meningococcal disease were identified in Sweden (9.4 million inhabitants) via the mandatory combined clinical and laboratory reporting systems. Incidence rate was 0.7, which is at a similar level as later years (0.5-0.8 during 2000-2010).
Among the patients 37 were women and 31 men, aged from 10 months to 89 years. The median age were 29 years and the incidence rate was highest among the teenagers (15-19 year of age) with a incidence rate of 2.9.
The average case fatality rate has been 12% during the past 10 years. In 2010 seven people died corresponding a case fatality rate of 10% (2-89 years of age). Three fatal cases occurred among children and teenagers.
It can be noted that there were no group A isolates and that group C and Y dominated, with B as number three. There were no clustering of cases during 2010. The dominating meningococci causing invasive disease in Sweden were Y:P1.5-2,10-1,36-2 (n=15). Besides this C:P1.5,2,36-2 (n=9) and C:P1.7,16-29,35 (n=5) were the most prevalent isolates seen.
One case was without laboratory confirmation. Capture-recapture analysis has indicated that <5% of cases are unnotified.
Antibiotic sensitivity was documented for invasive isolates with Etest.
Vaccination against meningococcal disease was not generally used. Single persons travelling to “risk” areas were vaccinated. With the low incidence and mortality rate in children/young people general vaccination is at present not considered.
